The Artist's Way: A 13-Week Creative Group

The Artist's Way by Julia Cameron provides a twelve-week course that guides you through the process of recovering your creative self. It aims to dispel the 'I'm not talented enough' conditioning that holds many people back and helps you to unleash your own inner artist.

How to Join

If you would like to join this group, please email us at arts@theriverhousewv.org. You will get confirmation that you are registered. Only 12 spaces!

How Does The Group Work?

Our WEDNESDAY evening group works together through the 12 weeks of The Artist's Way book, by Julia Cameron. Beth Reese, fellow creative, will guide us through the book. We will meet each week to share our progress and support each other in our creative journeys. Creative recovery at its best is a nonhierarchical, peer-run, collective process. You do not need to have done the Artist's Way before and returners are welcome!

To honor the process and the group, we ask that you make a commitment to the full 12-week program (plus one introduction meeting). We know you may have to miss one or two, but plan on all of them- each chapter builds on the previous one. You will be so glad you did!

Supplies

Each week, please bring a journal, writing implements, inexpensive spiral notebook, $5 donation, and Artist's Way book. Members need to purchase or borrow their own copy of The Artist's Way book (it is inexpensive if you buy used). https://www.amazon.com/Artists-Way-25th-Anniversary/dp/0143129252/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1516673344&sr=8-1&keywords=Artists+Way

What will happen at the first gathering ?

The first meeting is about 'Getting Started'. In this session, we'll share how the meetings work and set the conditions for a warm, safe, inspiring journey. To prepare, please read the introduction and Basic Tools section of the book and bring a notebook with you!

Does it cost anything?

There is a suggested donation of $5 each week to The River House for allowing us to use their facilities and to support their nonprofit community arts program.

"Creative Cluster"

This is a "creative cluster", not a taught course or therapy group. It is semi-facilitated with Beth working through the book alongside everyone else. You might like to read the appendix in the book called Trail Mix which covers Julia's concept of Sacred Circles (although we do it our own particular way!). Beth hosted another Artist Way group in 2006 that continued meeting for 10 years! (They just couldn't stop!)

Time, Dates and Location

We'll meet on Wednesdays. We will be at The River House at 6pm and the meeting starts promptly at 6:30pm. The session starts at 6:30pm and finishes by 8:30pm. This group will meet for 13 weeks (which includes the Getting Started session on Feb. 20), until May 15, 2019. We hope you'll commit to coming to most all of the meetings.

"This international bestseller has inspired millions to overcome the limiting beliefs and fears that inhibit the creative process. First published twenty-five years ago, The Artist's Way is the seminal book on the subject of creativity. Perhaps even more vital in today's cultural climate than when it was first published, The Artist's Way is a powerfully provocative and inspiring work. In it, Julia Cameron takes readers on an amazing twelve-week journey to discover the inextricable link between their spiritual and creative selves."
