What is The River House?

The River House is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization located in a historic building overlooking the Cacapon River in Capon Bridge, West Virginia.

Our mission is to provide a fun, welcoming space where participation in the Arts inspires deep community connections and nourishes the lives of individuals and families.

The River House is a community-based, arts and music venue. Also featuring a cafe, it is a place to connect and create together. The River House hosts live performances, art classes, community gatherings and an open workspace. In addition to a wide range of art and music activities for all ages, local artists enjoy a venue for demonstrating and selling their work. Free wi-fi plus a nourishing local pastries and an espresso bar add to the welcoming “sit and stay awhile” feeling.

Why is there a charge for concerts and food if The River House is a nonprofit?

Although many events are free, money generated from the café and some performances covers the cost of expenses and is invested back into more programming. A goal of any nonprofit is to achieve a positive revenue flow to build a reserve fund to ensure sustainability.

How is The River House funded?

The River House is funded by various sources, including individual donors, businesses, and private and state grants. The largest portion comes from individual donors. Donations are tax-deductible.

The River House is proud of the support from many local people and businesses who give small (and big) donations because they see the importance of The River House as a part of the community and believe in the benefits it brings to the community.

Additional funding comes from the small foundations. The River House also has received support from grants from the State of West Virginia. In addition, during the pandemic, The River House received funding from federal programs designed to keep people employed and operations continuing.

The River House is located on the Cacapon River. Does it get preferential treatment regarding land usage?

No. The River House complies with all land-use laws and regulations.

Can local folks use the river access from The River House parking lot?

Parking space at The River House is extremely limited. People who want to wade in the river or launch a canoe or kayak are welcome to do so from the small access point at The River House. All persons must do so at their own risk. After unloading, we ask that people move their vehicles to another parking area. Fortunately, other local organizations like the Capon Bridge Library, allow The River House patrons to use their parking lots when they are closed.

There is a new Public Access Site for the Cacapon River just upstream from The River House. This site is only ½ mile south of Route 50 on Christian Church Road. The one-acre site features parking and a canoe launch.
