Join us for this 3 hour long class where you’ll learn everything you need to get started embroidering. In the first hour we’ll cover basics, such as how to choose the right fabrics, hoops, thread, and other tools, as well as how to prepare your hoop, separate thread, and different methods for transferring designs onto fabric. Next, you’ll learn how to do six of the most commonly used stitches in hand embroidery: back stitch, split stitch, French knot, running stitch, whip stitch, and fly stitch.
Armed with your newly acquired knowledge and skill set, in the second half you will begin to work on your very own embroidery project – a beginner-friendly, folk-art bluebird and wreath designed specifically for this class – with support and guidance from your instructor.
The cost of the class is $40 and includes all materials, which you will be able to keep and take home with you. This class is a beginner-level course and suitable for ages 12 and up with or without prior sewing experience. Space is limited.
(Students ages 12-14 must be accompanied by an adult)
About your instructor:
Jelise Ballon is the face (and hands) behind That’s the Point Fiber Arts. She specializes in crocheted and hand-embroidered wearable and fine art pieces. She first tried her hand at embroidery as a child when her grandmother taught her how to make a French knot, but didn’t pick it up again until 35 years later when she discovered the joy and beauty of thread-painting and sketching. She recently had an embroidered landscape on display at the River House for the Bridge Art Show, and can often be found set-up at the River House Artisan Market, as well as other markets and shows throughout the area. She lives in Augusta with her husband and 5 dogs, and has three adult children.
